MARTA PETKOVA

Marta Petkova was born on January 14th 1986 in Sofia, Bulgaria. She graduated in the same city at the National School of Dance in the class of Rumiana Atanasova in 2004.

In 1995 she was a finalist in the International Ballet Competition in Tallinn, Estonia and Luxembourg. She won National Ballet Competition Anastas Petrov and received the Grand Prix and special prize of Dobrich Municipality. In the same year, Marta Petkova was awarded with the prize Sylvia Ko – Japan for young hope in the International Competition of Varna. During the same competition she was offered to continue her education in Kirov Academy in Washington, DC. In 2002 she won the Gran Prix at the International Festival in Fiviziano – Italy. In the same year joined the troupe of Sofia Opera and Ballet..

In 2006 she was awarded by the Ministry of Culture for young talent. Since 2007 Marta Petkova is prima ballerina in the same company and has in her repertory many dance parties including: Clara from The Nutcracker, Kitri from Don Quixote, Maria from Goat Horn, Odette – Odile from Swan Lake, Balanchine, Scheherazade, The Lady of the Camellias, Nikia and Gamzati from La Bayadere and many others. In 2011 she was awarded the Crystal Lyre for her achievements in ballet art and the Swan Lake performance.

She participated in the ballet festivals in the Kremlin and in Kazan dedicated to Nureyev! Visited the troupes in Palermo and Naples. She took part in the festival in Saratov, “Stars of Ballet”, Donetsk-Ukraine.

With the troupe of the Sofia Opera, she toured the Bolshoi Theater in 2018 with the ballet Corsair with the role of Medora. Guested on the seaside stage of the Mariinsky Theater in Vladivostok with the roles of Giselle and Medora.

In Norway-Oslo and Finland-Helsinki she was invited to play Nikia from “Bayaderka” in Natalia Makarova’s version, and in Magdeburg-Germany she toured in “Paquita”. He partners with world stars Kimin Kim, Vadim Muntagirov, Denis Rodkin and Svetlana Zakharova and many others.

In 2019, he received a second Crystal Lyre for overall contribution to the art of ballet.

In 2022, he participated in the ballet gala performances of Roberto Bolle and friends in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The same year, she was invited to a tour at the Mariinsky Theater, where she performed the role of Nurida in the play “One Thousand and One Nights”.

Winner of the award of the Metropolitan Municipality 2022.

From the new 2022/23 season of the Sofia Opera, Marta Petkova holds the position of Artistic Director of the ballet.
